This most amazing of temples is located in Periya Kanchipuram. It is apparently not mentioned in any puranas. However, it is believed that it was known as Sarppa Kshetra during puranic times. Initially it was a small temple. During the reign of the Pallava King Mudhalam Paramesvara Varman (CE 669), it was expanded into the present three tiered structure. The king had sculptors build a grand amount of sculptures around the temple.

In the first level, the Lord is present in the seated pose. In the second level, He is in the resting pose as Ranganatha. In the third level, He is in the standing pose. The third level is not normally open. It is made accessible only at certain times of the year. The pushkarini is believed to be the Viraja river itself.

Sad but true! Miscreants wrecking the sculptures trying to modify the thiruman.
